Re: Holy Cow, Miami cleaned house

Up until this past summer, I managed a townhome community in Blacksburg. This community catered primarily to Virginia Tech students, athletes included.

Sad to say, there are ways of 'meeting' the acedemic requirements without actually having the ability to meet those standards. It's coaching... how to pass certain exams, etc. (other students do the same thing). I discovered this in my day-to-day dealings with these folks.

I dealt with many athletes - many football players. Many had the inability to even take care of their own affairs. I had so many mothers call me to take care of their sons' business "Hi, My son is a football player at Tech....."
Had to have their mommies call and find out where the breaker box was, how to turn off water, etc.

This may sound harsh, but I have to say it. Some of these students are dumb as bricks, and terribly immature (athletes and non-athletes alike). There are ways of getting in.

Graduate school is where the genuine students and the wanna-bes are separated.
    You'll shoot your eye out.

All of these guys that were fired will be sought after by other schools, and they'll do well. As some on here have heard me say before--Success is determined not only by talent & knowledge, but being savvy enough to know when change is needed, even if things are going relatively well. Success is thankfully coming at Miami before a full out-and-out meltdown commences. Just hope they find some really great guys to put in place at Miami that will get the talent in there and cultivate it to win National Titles, not get Peach Bowl appearances.

BTW--I was signature #124 on the "Fire Coker" petition going around. He's a great football coach and a class act, but if you're not winning the games you should win and underacheiving with the talent Miami gets year-in/year-out, then you must go.

I will admit that I admire VPISU's engineering department, much better than ours no doubt, but no where near #2 in the world.
    case in point:

Actually I take that back, VT's E-school is only 3 spots higher than ours. Look out!
    Go Wahoos!
    Go Mounties!

that is rating the school as an engineering school...not the engineering dept which IS second in the world behind a school in germany
